By chance I came across this important statement while reading a very interesting blog this morning.
" Alcohol only creates problems and is as dangerous a drug as cocaine or crack etc. Just look at the misery it brings to people. Very sad."
Unfortunately it seems that there will always be those who continue to stupidly waste their lives away and at the same time ruin the lives of many others.
What might be a way to cure such stupid addiction once and for all?

I did give up smoking for two years, but started again after a family trauma. I was extremely depressed, and it was (and still is) a comfort to me. I know I'm probably shortening my lifespan by a few years by continuing to smoke, but it's a trade off that I accept. Mental health v Longevity.

The most evil thing about smoking is that the smoke exhaled can shorten the lives of nearby innocent non-smokers.
I realize that some claim to smoke alone but that is too often overlooked at such places as parties, clubs, and bars. Even special smoking areas set aside are not perfect.

I don't go to parties. clubs or bars. I smoke in my garden or conservatory, depending on the weather.
I have noticed that the increase in obesity over the last few years seems to have happened at approximately the same rate as the decline in smoking. Could it be that certain people are comfort eating instead of smoking?

If that is true a fast way to lose weight is to start smoking. I wonder if the weight-watchers would accept that conclusion?
I enjoy a drink now and again.. But can take it or leave it..
As for overcoming the addiction side of it .. Only the individual knows.. x

It's the mind that needs the appropriate treatment which is available at a rehabilitation centre - very good success by all accounts.

Pro I like a drink or two, mainly a bottle of wine on a Saturday night. Won't be drinking for a while though.
I used to smoke but gave up.

I'm one of your so called people with a "stupid addiction" and I am very grateful to be daily reminded about the label of an addict by comments from others around me. Such comments help keep me sober, healthy and happy, and able to enjoy every day of my life to the full. We cannot choose our body chemistry or inherited genes and not everybody gets the opportunity to begin to understand their addictive personalities. The ability to do so is often called a 'gift' and such a 'gift' is not given out to everybody - those people who are blessed with such a gift are always very generous with their time and services in helping those addicts who have not yet found their sanity. It is people helping people. You have been fortunate Skip not to be cursed with an addiction, it is not only a case of mind over matter. There is so much more to the affliction.

Most days a week I meet people with health problems related to various addictions. Most of them are normal people who just slipped into it, especially with alchohol, and now can't get out. If you saw someone withdrawing you would understand why giving up except in a calm ordered supportive way is so hard. There are some who do do it and I am always pleased to meet these people, though there are not many.

Believe it or not but in recent years I was in very close contact with a very dear friend who by sheer determination completely overcame a chronic alcoholic addiction. That is the person that I admire most of all. I do not tell a lie.

Good for your friend. It is a very difficult thing to do and often involves leaving your secure drinking friends behind to start completely afresh.

Actually my very good friend, being mainly a lone drinker, did not have to overcome the abandonment of drunken 'friends'

That is so fortunate for him/her. Many I meet are the ones you see on benches in public places with drinking buddies.Their whole social life revolves around the booze. There are many more people I think who drink alone that may never be counted. Your friend is very lucky to have such a friend as you.

The happy outcome is that while we used to be good friends some of the time, we are now good friends all of the time - a happy way to end the story.

Some people get addicted to things, others don't. I enjoy a drink, but have never become addicted. I enjoy a cigarette, and did become addicted! Why one but not the other? Who knows! There but for the Grace of God......I might have become an alcoholic.
