Zoos today are far removed from animals in cages. The environments provided are at times nothing short of amazing. But opinions are still divided as to whether we should have zoos.
Zoos do provide very good care and protection for many species today. The zoo is a great motivator for learning, especially for children.
I wonder if your thoughts are similar or quite different.

Modern zoos have come a long way from the days when the landed gentry kept menageries of strange and exotic beasts in confined cages as a status symbol. They are far more concerned these days with the welfare of the animals in terms of health and conservation. They are also excellent not only for the education of children, but also that of the next generation of naturalists and conservationists, and their work to prevent the extinction of rare species is sometimes, unfortunately, the only chance that those species will get due to man's continued lack of respect for the natural world.
There are those, however, who think that it is immoral to take any creature away from it's natural habitat, but as I have said, mankind seems intent on destroying said habitats at an alarming rate. When will we ever learn?
