Well, it looks like it's taken from space.

Is it the Aral Sea? Which has all but dried up due to man's naughtiness?

  Not the Aral Sea as I can see some sea there. Forest fires somewhere. I guess Portugal.

MM OK I am going the other way its a close up of a common object, or its like a slow exposure of the tide on a scummy bit of sand.
