For 14 years I had a dog and a cat of almost the same age - the cat was the younger by a few weeks. They were clearly the closest of friends who played together, slept together and even went for walks together, although the cat would turn for home after a few hundred yards when he reached the edge of his territory while the dog and I did the full mile.
