That makes two Kiwis in regard to firsts on Everest
Edmund Hillary (remember?) and Mark Inglis
Seems difficult to decide who is the greatest

Perhaps you were happy, good memories and even a good education, must have been something inspiring, for you to become a teacher yourself, and ofcourse a GG Grandad

You may be right Paul.
It was there that I feel I achieved my first worthwhile and everlasting goals in life - scholastically, socially, and sports related. I was very fortunate and possibly a sincere feeling of thankfullness called me back.
I was very pleased that Mrs Skip and our younger daughter Sheryl (now 40) were with me. I have talked about those wonderful days many times.
Actions speak louder than words - have I heard that saying before somewhere ? lol

You always provoke thoughtful thinking my friend. Haven't seen my school in ages(30 years). Glad you got to go back and it sounds like you enjoyed it.

You're right Wilbert, we all enjoyed the visit very much. We were taken on a conducted tour and we were very inpressed except for the bicycle cages.
Hundreds of boys ride bikes to school and there was a major problem. Each day a great number of bikes were stolen by uninvited visitors.
Now all bicycles are kept in large wire cages and padlocked for the whole school day.
Typical of the world we live in today and as they say - things are getting even worse with drugs and alcohol major contributing factors.

What a well-deserved achievement for Mark Inglis.

Wishing your team the very best for the summit climb tomorrow.
You say that I inspired you...believe it or not but you are the second blogger to make that comment today - I am beginning to think that something has gone wrong with me. I'm sure that I have never inspired anybody before - lol

did mark inlgis lose his legs due to frostbite when he was stuck up a mountain in NZ? because i think i saw a documentary about that sometime ago, what a fantastic achievment for him. what memories you must have had going back to school - did it smell the same?
you will be glad to know that menekse sailed through her blood test this morning, well, almost, it was done in one go with only minor crushing to my hand and a few tears, she is now feeling ill and is laid down whilst i do school with meric, we are going to the cinema tomorrow instead. thanks for your good wishes and support. glad to hear mrs skip is a good cook, the way to a mans heart and all that. perhaps you could get her to share a typical NZ recipe sometime?-

Yes, Mark Inglis had a mishap on Mount Cook in November 1982, ending up stuck in an ice cave dubbed 'Middle Peak Hotel' for 14 days. As a result he lost both legs below the knees due to frostbite.
I felt very much at home re-visiting my school after 60 years. Though so much had changed so much remained as it was in my mind. I could still 'see' the science block as it was then called, where I spent my final year. The front entrance to the school was very familiar as was College House, the boarding establishment.Though the small brick library had gone I had no trouble visualizing exactly where it stood. It was there that my ' interview ' to decide whether or not I was suitable to become a teacher, was held!
I'm sure tht Pam will gladly share a 'typical recipe sometime'. Not only is she a wonderful cook but she is also very innovative, with very strong artistic skills.
