Have the birds flown

by skip2468 @ 15/05/06 - 09:33:51 pm

:D

It has been suggested that I stop ruffling feathers and get back to more about BIRDS - lol

Bird feeding - we feed our garden birds mainly bread. We have found that by feeding in three different ways we enjoy three different results.

Crumb the bread and all types of birds feed independently with really no interaction at all - break the bread into only a few pieces and the interaction becomes apparent with the bully birds the mynahs ' throwing their weight around '. For the grand display and total interaction, provide only one slice of bread.

It can be like all hell let loose! The sparrows begin happily - they are then harrassed by the starlings - and then the mynahs move in and attempt to take complete control - believe it or not they are occasionally defeated by the sheer number of sparrows! The mynahs get the huff and start squabbling among themselves, no doubt blaming each other for the embarrassing defeat !

THE 'BULLY' MYNAHS !

How about that?

I love to watch birds. We have swallows here and I love to watch them drink out of a nearby creek. They don't land, they drink on the fly. The aerobics are great.

Great Wilbert and refreshing to find another lover of nature.

Yes swallows are wonderful to watch. We used to have a swimming pool near our house and what a delight to watch the special display by the swallows.

I put this blog on following a suggestion that was made to me. The instigator has not 'flown in' yet - lol

Salt Lake is close to mountains, etc and has areas of green and wildness. Grew up in the farmland of Ohio-I don't do well if I can't enjoy the wonders of God's creation. Also-if I find I am "too busy" to enjoy them-God is trying to tell me to slow down.

Wilbert, that is sound advice to all bloggers including me.

Slow Down - how true.

Yes I love birds and when I was a little girl I used to have the pleasure of sitting in the nesting boxes with the chooks while they laid their eggs. I was great friends with the chooks, poddy calves, cows, dogs rabbits anything in the animal kingdom. Here in our garden we have some lovely Native Doves they are just so beautiful and attentive and loving to each other. They are monogamous and if one should lose a mate they grieve and call for weeks and then finally settle down to life without a mate. So endearing pitty some humans couldn't pull a page from their book and study it.
Love from across the way with cheery smiles :-) and ((((hugs))))) from Dawna.

Thank you Dawna for your very interesting comments

I was brought up on a farm and probably spent much more time with animals than with people and I don't regret that at all.

Great about your loving native doves. Yes, there certainly is a lesson to be remembered.

Have been wondering where you went to. Not that 'bandit PC' again? lol

Hello Skip, No the lovely blip, blip computer is running smooth as. But it is a rather laborious job to reinstall everything the dashed blip, blip machine lost. So I have been preoccupied putting all my photos back and trying to get back some...I lost from folk I know have some copies. It's so frustrating to think I was silly enough to trust the thing in the first place, but never mind we all live and learn by our mistakes they say, don't they? So I have been a bit neglectful of my blog but I figured since I don't want to be top blog no one would really notice much. Take care and stay warm and snug as a bug in a rug as winter sets in. We had some sunshine today the first glimpse of sun in over 2 weeks. It is getting extremely chilly. Love from Dawna with cheery smiles :-) and some ((((((hugs))))))

Hey, more blogs about my friends the birdies. I put down two half loaves of bread yesterday, I left them in whole slices, and by the afternoon, we had had; Blackbirds arguing with blackbirds, the stupid Pigeons throwing the bread over their heads, Sparrows by the millions (poetic licence), our two Robbins (did you know that they are Britain's National Bird?) they seem a little weedy next to the Eagle and the Kiwi! Later a Crow came down a devoured four breakfast muffins, flying off with them one at a time. Wilbert - God must have had a good day, the day he gave us Birds.

WOW Paul, what a wonderful experience with all the different birds and the lively interaction.

I know now that the robin is the national bird of UK lol

Have you ever heard of the New Zealand Moa bird. As a comparison an ostrich would be a mere chick.

You know in the Garden-God had the whole chorus of songbirds, etc singing in His choir. Good point friend.

We feed the birds sugarwater in winter - it is great for attracting the smaller birds. I have an old tuna tin sitting on the birdfeeder and I pour the sugarwater into it - I make up a batch in an old jam-jar by simply mixing warm water and sugar - I fill the jam-jar about a third full of sugar. It works just as well as honey but is cheaper...

Thank you for your great idea

Winter here and clearly the birds need an energy giver to survive

Shall move into action first thing tomorrow

Shall now visit your blog - a courtesy call.

Thanks for your comments in my blog. Christchurch had another frost this morning (once we emerged from the smog caused by everyones fires !!!).

The birds are queuing up for me most mornings to put the sugarwater out for them. The idea came from our neighbour over the back fence who has done it for years.

I have an old wooden plate suspended on a string harness from the cherry tree with the tin in the middle for the sugarwater, around which I put some wildbird seed mix (I wait for it to be on special at Woolworths or Pak-n-Save then stock up.)

Last winter I also tried some of those hanging 'Bells' of wildbird mix - once they had discovered it they would get through one a week.

By having the plate suspended as it is from the tree it ensures that the birds are safe from our cat - who alternates between sitting on the branch above or the grass below. I'm sure some times though that the birds just taunt him !!!

(Neatly bringing the discussion around to your other post about Mark Inglis climbing Everest) We adopted our cat as a wandering kitten and when it came time to name him we named him after his trait of wandering the area far and wide & his trait of climbing to the very top of the tallest tree around (his own Everest)- and because at the time it was the 50th anniversary of the conquest of Everest his full name is "Sir Edmund-Everest Rovalot" Sir or Ed for short !!! The vets had such a laugh over the story behind his name when we took him in to be 'fixed'...

Great on your bird feeding and that's a good idea having the feeding sructure suspended. I can imagine the feelings of your cat being so close yet so far.

Thank you for your very welcome comment.
